Course Description
In this course, we will focus on two important aspects of safety in the construction industry: Hand and Power Tool Safety and Lead Safety.
Beginning with Hand and Power Tool Safety, this section of the course will present licensees with basic safety procedures and safeguards for hand and portable power tools. First, students will review basic safety rules for hand tools (tools that are powered manually). Examples of misuse will be provided. Next, licensees will review the different types of portable power tools and identify the safety switches and guards that each tool must be fitted with. Additionally, the course will quickly address the risk of electrical shocks and burns that can be caused by electric power tools. Finally, licensees will review the safety precautions recommended for pneumatic, liquid-fuel, and power-actuated tools.
The second module of the course, lead safety, will begin with an overview of the health hazards of lead exposure. Both short-term and long-term effects of lead exposure will be reviewed. Next, licensees will recall how and where lead is commonly used in construction projects so that worker protection policies can best be implemented. Finally, this section of the course will wrap up by addressing various methods of exposure reduction and employee protection. These include: engineering controls, housekeeping, personal hygiene, PPE, and respiratory protection.
To conclude the course, students will test their knowledge with a series of 20 exam questions.
